100% Grass Fed
This Grass Fed Standard is designed to be provided as an addendum to Global Animal Partnership (GAP) or other Third-Party Certification audits provided exclusively by Livestock Integrity Solutions Australasia Pty Ltd.
To be in compliance with this standard and eligible to be described as Grass Fed, livestock must not, at any point in their life from birth to slaughter, have been fed grain or products derived from grains.
1.0 - Source of Livestock
1.1 - Livestock that are to be described as Grass Fed under this Certification must have been either born on or sourced from properties Certified by Livestock Integrity Solutions Australasia and must have been raised in compliance this Standard. It is acceptable for an entity to run livestock that are not eligible to be described as Grass Fed (Split Operation) under this Certification, however they must be uniquely identifiable or run as a separate mob to prevent them inadvertently being described as Livestock Integrity Solutions Australasia Certified Grass Fed.
1.2 - Livestock must be traceable throughout their entire lives from birth to slaughter.
1.3 - The property must maintain records that identify all livestock purchased, sold or slaughtered as part of this Grass Fed Certification.
1.4 - Where Grass Fed livestock are transferred from one property to another or to an abattoir their accompanying movement declaration (LPA NVD / ASD or a suitable alternative such as supply chain documentation) must state that they are eligible to be described as Grass Fed.
2.0 - Grass Fed Feeding Requirements
2.1 - With the exception of milk consumed prior to weaning the diet of Grass Fed livestock must be solely derived from grass, herbage and forage throughout their entire lives as follows:
- Grasses (annual and perennial),
- Forbs (e.g. legumes and brassicas),
- Forage where forage is defined as any edible herbaceous plant material that can be grazed or harvested for feeding, with the exception of grain; and
- Cereal grain crops grazed or harvested before the grain had reached growth stage 69 on the Zadoks Decimal Code for Cereals.
2.2 - Consumption of seeds naturally attached to grasses, herbage and forage is considered incidental and acceptable.
3.0 - Accessing Harvested Grain areas
3.1 - Grazing cereal crop residues after harvesting of grain is prohibited unless;
- the paddock has attained a vegetation regrowth of at least 75% which is over 10cm prior to grazing, or
- grazing does not commence until five (5) days after a post-harvest rainfall event of 5mm or more.
3.2 - Inadvertent consumption of cereal grain which has matured within a pasture is permitted only where the cereal grain was not deliberately made available to livestock, is derived from volunteer or early maturing plants and constitutes less than 1% of the area being grazed.
4.0 - Supplements and additional Feed sources
4.1 - Animals cannot be fed grain, grain by-products or any other form of feed concentrate derived from grains.
4.2 - Where cereal hay is fed evidence must be available confirming that it was harvested before the grain had reached growth stage 69 on the Zadoks Decimal Code for Cereals.
4.3 - The following feedstuffs are specifically prohibited:
- Grains, Defined as a seed or fruit of a cereal plant, (Caryopsis) including, Barley, Corn, Maize, Millet, Oats, Rice, Rye, Sorghum, Triticale and Wheat.
- Grain residue or by-products including distillers grains,
- Soya bean (with the exception of Soya meal or hulls where included in a lick supplement); and
- Sprouted grains.
Free Range
1.0 - Confinement
1.1 - Livestock have not been confined during their lifetime for the purposes of intensive feeding and have had continuous access to graze in open pastures.
1.1.2 - Confinement for short periods of time to allow routine management practices to be undertaken is acceptable.
No Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s)
1.0 - GMO’s
1.1 - Livestock have never, during their lifetime been fed a Genetically Modified Organism.
No Added Hormones
1.0 - GMO’s
1.1 - Livestock have never during their lifetime been treated with Hormonal Growth Promotants (HGPs).
1.1.2 - HGP means a veterinary chemical product that:
- a) Contains a substance that is, or a mixture of substances that are, responsible for oestrogenic, androgenic, gestagenic or thyrostatic activity to enhance growth or production in livestock; and
- b) are registered for use for this purpose in the country of application.
No Antibiotics
1.0 - Antibiotics
1.1 - Livestock have never in their lifetime been treated with antibiotics, including topically, Sub-therapeutic (preventive) levels of antibiotics, Ionophores, coccidiostats, beta agonists, or sulfas.
